a/c problems

I have a 2011 F-250 6.2. A while ago I was having issues with my a/c blowing cold air. It would blow cold air about 15% of the time it was on. I was told that I might have air in my lines. So I set it up to vacuum it out and then recharge it. I did all of the right steps and started to refill it. I could get about 1/2 pound of Freon in it and the low side would shoot up to 90 psi and the high side would only be 120 psi and the compressor would never kick on. And when it would work before the compressor would kick on every now and then. The temp outside was 99 when I did it. Any ideas on what it maybe could be? I know taking it to a mechanic would be expensive but if I need to I would. Thanks for the imput......

Hi codyop,

It might be time to make an appointment at your dealer; I know they'll want you to stay cool more than 15% of the time, especially in the heat of the summer. How many miles are on your truck?

1. What was the hi/lo pressures when it did blow cold?
2. When it was blowing hot was the compressor engaged or not?

If it was blowing cold then it likely had sufficient Freon. Check to see if the compressor clutch is engaged and spinning the compressor when it goes warm on you. If the clutch was engaged and the compressor was running but the vent air was warm Id be looking at the blend door and its actuator.

Who ever described the air bubbles doesnt quite know AC systems. Air in the system is a possibility but that means that the AC the service was preformed incorrectly. Once a system is evacuated it should not have air in it. Thats the reason for evacuating.

Only excepting a 1/2 pound on a fully evacuated system isnt right for sure. Something in the (your) procedure is wrong. Lets see what the shop comes back with. Hard to trouble shoot without seeing it first hand. I can only toss out what-ifs.

If you want 50 degree air blowing out of the vents the low suction side psi should be about 45psi. The high side side should be about 175-180psi on a hot system. That correlates to ~115-123*F. The system needs to be hotter than ambient to reject heat.

A/C problems

when I first got my 2012 F450 I had a terrible time with my A/C it kept leaking freon, after enough dye to sail a small boat, it was discovered that the compressor had a very small crack in the casting mark, on the engine side, would seep the freon out but too small to leak the dye. OK was under warranty but took 4 trips to the dealer. NOW 178XXX miles later, my A/C blows cold for a few days, then blows HEAT not ambient air but engine heat! Then sometimes after turning it off and back on it may blow cold for a few days or a few hours. Freon is good, compressor kicks on fine, its something under the dash but what?

Yes its something under the dash...Your blend door. Do you have dual zone or regular dash controls. Look in the tech page here I did a write up on single control blend door actuator replacement. What your experiencing is classic blend door actuator losing its mind.
If your compressor is running and your getting heat its not a Freon problem
