Bad recipe!

Take (1) 36 year old pickup truck

Add one central Texas summer day at about 97 deg F

Idle truck in driveway with AC running at maximum

Find something to do in house or backyard for 10-20 minutes

Voila! If you didn't have a cooling system problem before, you probably do now.

Anyway, spent part of the afternoon giving the system a real good flush and fill.

I have no fan shroud. Do you guys think this contributes to running warm? BTW, this is the 67 with 352.

Any other ideas for things to look at for running warm? Idling for a while or after driving at highway speeds for an extended period, it get's hot. Otherwise , it's running pretty good.

You gotta have a shroud!! Especially with temps that high. Made all the difference in my 71 390. Used to get hot at idle til the shroud was put on. Shroud is absolutely necessary, I wouldn't even think of running any vehicle without a radiator shroud.

Also, think about investing in a flex fan. They're about $30 from summit and it makes a huge difference especially at idle but even at cruising speeds. You might need a spacer too so it doesn't hit your pulleys.

I just went thru the whole cooling system on my truck and now it doesn't move off of 190 degrees whether I'm sitting in traffic or cruising along.

YOU NEED A FAN SHROUD!!!!

I couldn't afford to buy one so I mad one out of a plastic trash can and a piece of T1-11 (OSB). That was a year ago and it still works great.

If you get a flex fan, don't get one of those cheesy little, Chinese star-looking fans. Those aren't worth spitting on. Pick up one of those full sized flex-fans. They have one more blade than the stock fan on top of being able to flex.

My truck used to run hot with a 180* t-stat in traffic but would take forever to warm up normally. So I installed the 190* t-stat that should have been in there in the first place and now my temp is constant. Sometimes the coolant needs to stay in the radiator a little longer in order to efficiently cool the block.

Bad recipe!

Hey gtex...........

Once you shut yours off when it's hot, wait a 1/2 hr and try to start it does it NOT want to start?? Like the fuel is boiled out or such. Pumping the gas does not make it start, just crank, crank, crank til it catches. It runs rough, coughs then smooths out to a mild idle as the temp guage comes off of almost pegged HOT.

I put a 180degress thermostat in mine just so it would not do this so bad, but it did not help at all. I'm biding my time till I can get my other motor redone and put in with a nice Holley 4bbl. I've about had it with that Autolite carb, rotten piece of JUNK . I've gone thru it, but the accel pump still does not work good enough most of the time that it does not sputter when you try to take off. If I oil the linkage, it works great for a couple days, then it goes back to nill.

Every once in a wjil. I'll get the sequence wrong when starting hot, and she'll struggle. But usually, she turns right over even hot.

Even yesterday as she was boiling over in the driveway. I didn't hit the gas at all, just tapped the starter and off she went.

It was actually leaking from the radiator just below the filler area, at the seam to the cooling area.

I killed the AC, turned off the motor, hosed down the radiator for a bit, fired back the engine to get things turning with the cap off, and proceeded to flush things out very well.

I then drove to the car-wash where I sat for a while, keeping a high idle and turning the AC on and off to try and keep things cool. Never got real hot.

It sure is pretty now. And I'm so close to getting rid of the darn exhaust leaks. Just one slight leak on one manifold.
