I think I need a new steering rack for a 1988 Ford F-Super Duty at work. We have 2 1988 F-150's that the steering is fine on. Can these steering boxes be interchanged? Also, how long can I expect this to take? I have never done this before. What else should be done while doing this (changing fluid?) ? Thanks.
Hey Matt! I would start by measuring the units. Then visually comparing size of the components. There will probably be some differences in size. I assume they are all either power assist or all manual steering?
Swapping them out isn't a big deal. Bleed the entire unit properly and you're good to go. Get back to us if you need more assistance. Thanks and we'll talk to you later....
Technically, they aren't "racks" - that's only on a "rack & pinion" steering system, but our trucks use a Pitman arm system with a steering gear box & an inverted-Y linkage.
The only extra thing I'd do is add a filter. If you want more reliability, swap in a Saginaw pump from an Econoline with the same engine as your truck.
