So the other day I remote started my truck in the garage and when I walked out the door into the garage I could faintly smell unfiltered diesel exhaust. Is this normal and I'm just now noticing due to increased awareness after the EGR cooler replacement? Or is it possible that a fitting or seal is a bit loose?
I had the very same code and similar symptoms occur on my 2011 at roughly the same milage. The EGR cooler core was replaced and ECU refreshed to the most current revision under warranty.
Hard to determine the root cause since I do not excessively idle my engine and for the most part I refuel at the same stations with quality fuel(as far as I know or can control; high volume, brand name...). I was in the practice of using B5 from a certified supplier due to the inherent lubricity and from what I read it runs cleaner.
I am now running Motorcraft PM-22 with regular diesel but I believe(and it sucks that this requires a belief rather than fact) that the cause was somewhere in the programming and EGR strategy since I also own a BMW X5 35D and have had no issues to date with the EGR cooler plugging. BMW does not recommend any additive use so we use straight fuel. For the record, X5 has the same emissions equipment(SCR, DPF, etc).
I received this code this weekend. I have an appointment with the local dealer for next week. I hope it is under warranty. I have 35,000 miles on 2012 truck. I have always used an additive, either PM-22 or the Opti-Lube XPD.
I took my truck out yesterday and drove it pretty hard by accelerating real hard 4 or 5 times. This morning when I started the truck the CEL was off but came back on after about 60 miles of normal driving. My appointment with the dealer is this afternoon.
As I mentioned above it's covered under the 8/80 emissions warranty so you should be all good. I've also ran an additive in my tank since day one. Mostly Opti-Lube products.
You are correct. It is currently having the EGR cooler core being replaced. My hour meter shows less than 8% idle time and I frequently tow about 13,000lbs. Again, I have used an Optilube additive since taking delivery of the truck from the show room. I have asked the Technician if there is a strategy to prevent this from occurring in the future but have not received a reasonable answer. Maybe someone on this forum can provide some insight into the root cause and potential prevention measures. I refuse to believe it is a design flaw, if anything I think the fuel quality is a contributing factor.
