I have a 99 ranger 4cyl automatic. Speedo started cutting out and transmission started slipping really bad. I was working out of town and had no choice but to take it to a mechanic (as i usually fix it myself). He charged me 800 bucks for a used tranny installed. Fine. Get the truck back and it's worse than before i brought it in. At this point I'm supermad and just limp the truck home from Detroit to ky... I get home and swap out the speed sensor. I acted better as far as shifting but the speedo still flicked like it had a short. So I swapped out the actual sensor plug. Now it works better than it ever has but still has an occasional flicker from the speedo and slight jump when shifting. I have completely changed everything I know to do except swapping the rear axle. I don't want to junk this truck cuz the motor is solid but I can't keep sinking money into it. Any suggestions or other members that have had this problem??? Please help.

Since you like turning your own wrenches, maybe consider investing in a low cost ELM scantool, running FORScan or a like software to the viewing device of your choice as discussed here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-scantool.html & have it scan All of the vehicle computers/controllers for trouble code clues & post All code Numbers.
been down this road,, loose fuses for the gem,, relay under the hood loose,, bsr behind radio ,,, and mine still does it every once in a while,,, start up goes into limp mode then after a few miles straightens up and will run as long as start motor up every once and a while,, let it sit over night and back to the beginning,,, is you find out waht it is please post it,,,
To get you started on your trouble shoot, since you report the speed-o & tranny shifting have been acting out, put the rear differential mounted ABS speed sensor on your suspect list, as its PID output is used by the tranny computer, speed-o, ABS & cruise control systems. SO, if the speed sensor output is corrupt, those other systems may also be acting out & the ELM scantool can also querry those computers/controllers for clues, that a code reader, or autoparts store low end scantool cant access. Let us know what you find.
