Chasing Codes... three left
Bad part is when I called Actron they refused to tell me what the #'s meant telling me to ask Ford. Crappy tech support IMHO.
Anyway, I appreciate all the help you gave me.
Thanks, again.
Cleaned up three more grounds on the chassis this morning. Going to redo point to point continuity again on the O2's now. There are some 6 other grounds off this computer. Will check each one as well.
What do you know of Denso brand sensors from Pep Boys? Crap or good?
More thoughts for consideration, since you don't have any maintenance history on this puppy & it has lots of mileage on it, consider carrying on with changing All the vehicles fluids & this would include a brake system fluid flush with Motorcraft DOT-3 fluid & a differential fluid change, tranny fluid flush with a pan drop & filter change, followed by a full fluid pump out to get All of the old fluid out of the torque converter, valve body, cooler & lines & use a licensed Mercon-V fluid. Same for flushing the power steering too.
Use a quality coolant that meets Fords specs for the cooling system.
My 99 is scheduled for all this on its 90K scheduled maintenance go round soon & it'll also get new hoses, including heater hoses, thermostat & radiator cap. Good luck on your resurrection project.
That said, I believe you are correct and I plan to take better care of it then the last idiot. First and foremost is to change the oil.
What are your thoughts about this. Read this on another forum.
Pour in a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil (in place of adding more oil) and run it for 100 miles or so. Drain the oil and replace with new. MMO will thin the oil and allow the sludge to drain out, as well.
Eventually, with regular oil changes the vehicle will be back on track.
For the first time in my life I'm trying Valvolene red bottle high mileage recipe semi-syn MaxLife 5W-30 in the wifes 2000 Neon, to try & address a sudden increase in oil consumption when it was switched to the then new recipe SN 5W-30 Havoline.
I also switched the Neon to the down sized Motorcraft FL-400S filter & between the two its stopped the Neon start up knock its always had with the OEM Chrysler filter & Mobil special, or Mobil 5000 oil the Dealer always used when the mil owned the vehicle.
So far the Maxlife has cut the oil consumption by half & its now on the third MaxLife oil change, with 2 months of hot summer driving & hasn't used any yet, so consumption is getting better & so far I'm favorably impressed with the MaxLife consumtion & lack of start-up noise results in the Neon.
Also decided to run it in the 94 Taurus 3.8L & so far it hasn't used any, like it suddenly did with the SN recipe Havoline, but the Taurus isn't driven much so its too early to know if it'll help its consumption. Neither vehicle had ever consumed any oil until the SN recipe Havoline went in & with its SN recipe NOACK % evaporation going up to 15.5, retested at 15.1 & 15.4% I began looking for a lower NOACK engine oil & found that the semi-syn MaxLife high mileage was only 10.7%, better than some synthetics & no bad reviews around the net. So for the first time in my life I decided to try a Valvolene product.
It's also Dexos1 licensed, so it has to have fewer piston deposits, thus if you suspect like me, that your & my rings may be carbon or varnished fouled & sticking , give the high mileage MaxLife a run & see how it does. I'd Not use any Marvel Oil, or any other aftermarket additive with the MaxLife, as it doesn't need any help doing a tidy up & removing deposits thing.
What kind & level of top end sludge does the engine have???? Thick black tar like, or soft pudding like, or hard baked on carbon like, or clean but coated with varnish????
How thick are the deposits???
Any kind of engine noise, like valves ticking, clacking, lifters sticking, or collapsing, marble noise, or lower end knocking sounds????
Is the engine using oil, if so how much over what mileage figure????
More input on the engine deposits, noise, oil consumption is needed to suggest messing with it by adding aftermarket tidy uppers, lest on a really dirty engine they loosen up too much too quickly & clog up something important.
BTW, our 4.0L is to use 5W-30, as its oil pump never got upgraded to be able to pump enough volume of the hot lower viscosity 20wt.
