Hi guys so I have a big problem. Last spring my truck just stopped running when I tried to change the distributor cap and rotor. It was the fusible link and I twisted it and touched it to the connecter, lights came on and it turned over, well when it turned over a spark came out, so I tried it again and it look like the spark came from the alternator. Well I left it over night and bought a solder. Solder it. I got nothing it's like I blew the link again. Also I already changed the starter relay and I have good voltage on that, battery, starter, and alternator. Any ideas?
From your description it sounds like there is a dead short in your electrical system and the fusible link is doing it's job.
If there are sparks coming out of the alternator, start there. First check all of the wiring and connections at the back of the alternator. If they are all okay, take the alternator off and have it tested. A short will show up on the test.
Once you find the short, replace the fusible link, never try to repair a blown link.
I don't know what type of ignition I have. Whatever stock I suppose, it's my grandpas truck and he just wanted a plain work truck. Thank you though. But the alternator was bad, I got a new one, hooked it up, still nothing, I even got another new fusible link, but no lights or power to the cab, I'm thinking I blew another link, there's another one hooked up to that same electrical line
