Rough Idle

I recently bought a 00 Excursion v10 2wd everything looked right no major problems. I noticed it has a rough idle and i thought it could be the EGR i went under the hood and theres no EGR in sight. I plugged the OBD reader to see if it would give any codes since the there was no check engine light on and wanted wanted to make sure it worked, It showed a P0304 code its Cyl4 missfire i checked plugs/coils and i noticed theres a little insert inside Cyl4 plugs hole in the head that it has the plug screwed on. I decided to change all the plugs and the coils and i still have the rough idle and code i can hear a ticking noice around the engine in the passenger side. Can Someone help me figure this problem out?

Don't know much about you gasser types unfortunately. I'm going to hazard a guess and say the insert for #4 plug is probably a helicoil, not uncommon for V10's up until the 2004 MY if I remember correctly.

As for your rough idle, what's 'rough'? Shaking, coughing, sputtering...? Does it go away when warmed up and is only a cold-start issue, or does it stay rough the entire time regardless of engine temps? Once you get some revs going does it smooth out? Return to rough when the rpm drop? Smoking from the tailpipe?

Just throwing some typical questions out there...

Many, if not most V-10 EXs don't have the ERG. Insert is from a previous repair of a blown out spark plug. Early modular motors have an issue with plugs occasionally blowing out of the head due to too few threads in the head. This was addressed by a redesign in '02-'03 which added to the number of threads. If the insert is a quality unit and was installed correctly it should be perfectly fine. I decided to change all the plugs Due to the plug hole thread issue plug changes must be done carefully and by "the book". Very light coat of never seize on the threads and torqued to only 14 to 20 ft/lbs (opinions vary on torque values, search some about this). and the coils COPs only need to be replaced when they fail (individually), typically they have very long service lives. Many aftermarket cheap COPs don't last nearly as long as the recommended (and expensive) Motorcraft units. and i still have the rough idle and code You could try cleaning the MAF sensor and IAC valve, they may not be setting that code but a less than well maintained engine could benefit from having them cleaned and that may help smooth out the idle. You could also double check for a good connection at each COP connection where the wiring harness attaches. i can hear a ticking noice around the engine in the passenger side. Most likely sources of a ticking noise are either a loose or loosening spark plug (those darn short threads again!) or more likely an exhaust leak. These mod motors also like to break exhaust manifold studs off (poor design) and that will result in leaks of varying degrees. Can Someone help me figure this problem out?
Hopefully the above will help with the troubleshooting some.
And Matt was asking some good questions while I was slooowly typing.

Shaking While stopped or in park it doesnt smooth out and it doesnt overheat.

You should try posting in the V10 forum, when you have body/interior questions the Excursion forum is great, but for engine specific issues the engine-specific forum is often better.
