I used a different small version of the inline filter above, but all it takes is one load of bad fuel to clog it. I now run larger elements which have much more tolerance between annual changes.

That Fleetguard FF5288 is awesome! Decorum prevents a description of my pleasure at beholding it. But all I'm seeing online is 12 packs for $100 and one place with singles for $25 plus freight. Anybody know where to get summa dat off the shelf?

I like mine. NAPA 4911, a repackaged Stanadyne FM100. Several different easy-to-change filter options from 2 to 150 microns, and a bunch of available add ons such as fuel heater, pre screen, water in fuel indicator and a couple others I can't bring to mind. Also, it's designed for either suction or pressure applications, and has a flow rating of 80 gph.

I've installed the WIX 33972 in over a dozen trucks - at least half were up north (one in Canada). This is a simple, effective and very economical solution for pre-pump filter. All you need is about a foot of 5/16" 30R9 hose, (4) fuel injection hose clamps and the WIX 33972. Replace the rubber hose between pump and hard line from tank with 30R9 and new filter. The filters are $8ish one at a time at Oriellys.

The Racor PS120 is probably the best solution. I have installed several of these as well.

Find your local fleetguard sales outlet or sales rep and look locally.

Thanks Chris!

Local shop is in same strip mall as my FIL's hobby train store, just never noticed it before.

I have 3/8 hose from the tank so this makes an easy transition to the 5/16 required at the pump. Plus it can mount up tight on the frame with a coupla zip ties and it's got relatively huge surface area on the mesh. Schwing.

Glad it's not too far. He'll probably have to order it in, but just have him put it on his next shipment so you're not stuck with any freight charges.

I was under the impression that the factory fuel supply from the tank pickup to the pump inlet was 3/8"? You're saying the factory pump inlet is only 5/16"? I though the return line was 5/16"?

Just another alternative.
It was 4 years and I figured I would cut it apart to see how it was doing. Looks good. haven't touch it in years . Spun on a new one for $10 and forgot about it. Just installed this system one on the 3rd truck a few weeks ago.

The supply line/hose pre-pump is 5/16". It goes from 5/16" to 3/8" on the blue hose with QD ends on it that goes over the engine x-member...

I never replace the whole line/hose from the tank. The air leak problems with the QD fittings are rare and exaggerated. Just cut the rubber hose off the metal line pre-pump and clamp 5/16" hose directly on metal line and pump. There is no way I'd use anything but fuel injection hose clamps for this.

This whole mod (in-tank and pre-pump) is under $20. I have done many of them this way.

I've done a few this way too. Yes, it is mounted horizontally!! This makes it mess-free to clean/change the element.

This is typical of the in-tank screens I've deleted...

I ordered the Racor PS-120, from TDS.
I also ordered the fuel sump kit from Full Force Diesel, so I don't have to be bothered with dropping the tank. Of course, this means I won't have the chance to do the Harpoon mod, but I can live with that.
I'm working on driving it enough to burn off most of the fuel this week.
I was hoping to do a DIY version, but Home Depot didn't have what I needed, and I didn't feel like looking elsewhere.

I think this is all you really need. It's only there to protect the pump. You have a fuel filter in the valley which does it's job just fine. If you're clogging this, you have other issues that need to be addressed. I've had my little filter like this one for over 20k miles, and there's barely a few specks in it.
