460 - What octane?

62BigBlue, I have gibson tri-y headers and could not be happier with them. They were a breeze to install, look GREAT, and have NEVER leaked in the 45,000 miles I have put on them. I still have the stock CAT, and I run a SIDO flowmaster series 40 exhasut out to 2.5" pipes. The K&N I made myself and just a used a 6"x12" cylindrical filter. Machined 2 large holes in 3/4" MFD plate 6" in diameter for the twin throttle body hoses to go to, put it in the stock airbox location and hoseclamped it all together. Cost me $45 for the filter, the rest was free from work. I did all those mods at the same time and it REALLY snapped up my throttle response and gave me more low end grunt. This is real world seat of the pants stuff too, not just "Yeah, I think I might feel something".

Hey Rich, I have an FIPK on a 460. A previous owner buggered up the stock air box so I went K&N. No problems installing it. It's kinda noisy so If you don't like intake noise stay away. I don't mind and it makes really nice noise when you stomp on it.

460 - What octane?

Rabidranger & Drool, Thanks for the help. My stock airbox is semi buggered. Two of the threaded insert nuts are missing so I need to do something as I am sure it will only get worse. I also noticed that the intake from the grill as it enters the airbox has kind of twisted so that the seal is not tight at all.
How do your systems handle the PCV? Something in my system is tweeked so that the plastic tube running from the PCV to the airbox does not want to stay connected to the airbox.
Do eiter of you have pictures? I would sure like to see what they look like. My e-mail is richlars@comcast.net.
Thanks again for your help,

The PCV plastic tube ends up being cut and modified to plug in near the filter. Looks like it would solve that problem too. Sorry, no pics.

Been there, done that! Stumbled on the idea quite by accident. Clyde would ping ~5" of vacumn with regular but was OK with mid-range fuel. Before that I always paid the price for higher octane in both tanks.

Had my distributor recurved before our last trip from Minnesota to southern Colorado. Basic timing set @ 12* and I ran the lowest octane stuff I found and never heard ping one ... even in the hills of western Iowa and Missouri . Found some "same price" mid-range going across Kansas but it made no difference. I pulled my 24' Hitchhiker II 5th wheel from ~900' to almost 9000', against headwinds and crosswinds and not a thing heard.

The distributor was replaced with a rebuilt back in '96 when I bought the truck. Ruined the OEM trying to get it out. According to Don (Don's Ignition Service, Blaine, MN ) mine was good compared to most rebuilts but was sticking and a little off. He adjusted the springs and weights to match my load and engine rpm. After the rebuild I couldn't be happier.
