I am working on a 1996 F250 4x4 with a turbo diesal. The front axle has automatic hubs. The bearing adjustment nut has only one nut and all the shop manuals I have read tell you how to adjust the preload with the 2 nut and lock washer between them. Also this truck has only three screws holding the auto hubs on. I know this is not uncommon but non of the shop manuals reconize this axle. Does anyone have a clue where I can go, or can give me the instructions. Thanks
Hottemp, I've got the same truck and frontend. I replaced the auto hubs with superwinch manual hubs a few years back. While replacing front calibers I decided to repack the bearings. I have only one large nut with a snapring keeper in front of the nut. I have been trying to figure out what keeps the keeper in. Apparently there is suppose to be an outer lock nut that I am missing. According to superwinch you have to add the outer nut. What I have found out so far is to torque the nut to 160-200 ftlbs then back off 90 degrees. I,m still checking, if I found any more info I'll let you know.
That is exactly what I've got. Napa ordered me a locking spindle nut that I am going to try and use to replace the spindle nut and C-snapring keeper. If everything works I'll let you know. If you are going to keep the 3 bolt auto hubs you shouldn't have to change anything. I still haven't recieved the spindle nut socket yet, so I don't know if it will fit the original nut or the one the books say is on the truck!!
Hottemp, I got the spindle nut kit. The first one had one nut one flat washer and one lock washer. I installed flat washer first, then the lock washer, then the nut. Torqued it down to 160lbft, then backed it off 90 degrees. Everything was O.K. Then I got the second kit and it had two nuts plus the washers, which sounds like what you read about. I decided to use the flatwasher, lock washer and nut combo again. The nut is locked in an isn't going anywhere. The part number for the kit from NAPA is 630-1660. If you want to use two nuts, make sure someone hasn,t removed one from the pack. Plus the six lug spindle nut socket is alot easier to get then the one that fits the original spindle nut.
