8.8 explorer differential offset

Is the offset to the passenger side which would help me with steering gearbox clearance?

It is offset to the passenger side, but you don't have to offset the motor and trans to match it. What motor are you using? Most that I have seen here allow enough room for the steering.

4.3 liter V6 exhaust manifold outlet goes right where gearbox mounts. Sliding the motor over an inch to an inch and a half should allow both to work great. Will put pictures in later.

I purchased an 8.8 rear end for my hot rod project 49 f-100 didn't realize at the time the diff is offset for explorer gas tank and so forth. Would it be best to look for mustang rear or modify the one I have now? looking for posi and 31 spline not the angled driveline.

The tranny and diff does not need to line up from above, in fact it is better for U joint bearings if they don't. Just install engine tranny centerline parallel to frame centerline (it can be centered or offset to either side as needed, many OEM installs are offset), do not angle, the drive shaft can angle between tranny-rear axle no problem. Read my headers, motormounts and crossmember topic, we offset Gary's 4.6 motor and tranny 1" to pass side for header/steering box clearance.
Mcjr, a mustang rear would be way too narrow.
