American Ice Breakers
U.S. Coast Guard Cutter History
This is an amazing compilation of the US Ice breakers before and after it was transferred solely to the US Coast Guard.
Enjoy the read.

The new Mac is a pretty cool boat. Looks much better than the old one, and she works buoys in the summer. That thing always reminded me of a whale. I remember around 1998 when they finally changed her hull color to red. Never understood why she was the only breaker in the fleet that was white.

I have been on this one where an effort was made trying to save her. She didn't fare to well at Suisun and thought there would be a lot of work to get her museum worthy. The engine rooms were a mess. Some second deck compartments were flooded from rains. We did get a lot of electrical fixtures off of her that were stored on her for some reason. Way more than she would need.

Up late last night trying to fix a web site builder update that crashed. After going back to an older version and manually re-linking albums I ran across six pictures of the Glacier I took when walking across her in the Reserve Fleet. Only one from inside but it caught my attention which is why I shot it and will put up later tonight.

They really should get rid of these ships sooner. It's ridiculous to let them sit and fall into this kind of condition to where they can become unsafe. We still have two 180's that were decommissioned in the 90's sitting there. They need to go.
Tim, not sure if you were aware or not, but the Storis was towed to Mexico and scrapped. That upset a lot of people, but I think it's for the best.

The problem with the Storis was that she wasn't a Navy ship but under the eyes of the General Service Administration. The Navy would have donated the ship like she did to our group, the USS Hornet Association. The GSA put her up for sale with a minimum bid of $20,000 and went to what one would call a sleazy used car salesman in San Diego after the reserve wasn't met. He then turned around and tried to extort double (?) from the Save the Storis Foundation. Suffice it to say a lot of crap and behind the scenes back stabbing went on with this ship. We had also just had the Glacier fiasco. Too bad as she no doubt could have been saved. I remember when this all happened since we were privy to all that went on at MARAD Suisun and the Hornet is in Alameda.
