So I settle in to the garage to change the ball joints, u joints... Throw new brakes on there while it's all apart, bla bla. I was using all top shelf NAPA parts based on the info on the door sticker of my '96 f250. Door says I have the HD truck 8800 plus, but the 38xx front axle. It is an ext cab 4x4 with the D50. No big deal, give me the parts that fit right. Well wouldn't you know I get into the first set of ball joints and the upper goes in great, the bottom doesn't. Back the the store to get the joints for the heavier front axle. Change everything out, put the hubs back together, go to install the calipers back on the saddle... No go. Wrong size rotors for the WRONG AXLE. Let's take it ALL apart and do it again!!!
So here is some free advice for those of you with a '96 or probably even a '97 f250... Don't trust that door sticker when ordering parts!
Well... On the later 96 and 97s, I wouldnt trust either until you have had it apart and can see it for yourself.
My door sticker says 3850 lb front axle, and the truck actually has the 4600 lb front axle. Unfortunately, it cost me a ton of time and aggravation figuring that out and it wasn't the parts guys fault... this time.
did you buy the truck new?
my bet is the door sticker is correct, and sometime over the past 19 years the front axle developed a problem and a previous owner swapped in a different axle from a junk yard.
