I would like to get some sort of intake for my 1990 I6. I am having trouble finding the right one though. I know K/N makes one, but I'm not all about the hype or paying 200 some dollars for it. I'd rather make my own over anything else. Does anyone have any suggestions?

How about the K/N drop in filter? The stock airbox is a cold air intake already. The K/N intake kit is not a cold air kit. Although it does flow more air, it's mostly the hot air of the engine. There is a link around here somewhere to a think called Project MPG. Heres thre short version of the story. They used 4 different intake setups. 1, stock; 2, K/N drop in; 3, k/N drop in with insulation wrapped around all the air ducts; 4, K/N intake kit. The one with the best results was the K/N with the insulation. I have bought the K/N drop in, and I have the same year truck and engine, and all I got out of the filter was a little bit of throttle response. Not very much at all. Hope this helps you.

I use a k&n drop in myself. I gained 10 horsepower...then I woke up (lol). Is there any way to get more air into the filter housing? I see the duct going in but its a pretty small opening. I thought about cutting it back but then It would suck air from the engine compartment. Any Ideas?

The air intake is not the weak link in the air flow system. Its the heads and intake runners. Undersize valves and small runners. Porting out the head helps a lot from what I hear.

Has anyone successfully made a differant set of pipes that go from the airbox to the i6 throttle body. The accordian style oem pipes seem like they would have a lot of turbulance. I have been tosing around some Ideas, It would be cool to see what others have done?

There is very little to be gained anywhere above the cylinder head. IMO, any money you spend on intake stuff is wasted until more air can get through the port and past the valve.

I put a K&N drop in filter and a glass pack type muffler on my truck about two years ago. I can feel no gain in power other than it will pull some hills now without having to down shift from fifth gear as soon or as often. I changed the paper air filters around 10,000 miles and calculate that I will begin to save money after 40,000 miles or so.

You guys have been a lot of help., thanks. I'm now thinking about just going and getting a better filter , any ideas?

I was also throwing around the idea of making the tube that goes from the intake manifold to the airbox out of hard pipe, the only problem is that I would have to go from 3 inch tubing to 1 or 2 I'm not exactly sure...and I not sure what the benefits would be...may not even be worth it, just a thought.

You might try getting two cone style filters with 3" openings and cutting 2 pieces of 3" tubing. exhaust tubing works great. Connect the pipes to the plastic going to the TB. and put the two filters behing the grill. it worked great for me. Remove the air box and your up and running.
