removing cats, air pump,etc....

If emissions inspections were of no concern, could I remove all that stuff, including the cats, without experiencing any other difficulties (ie: check engine light, etc.)? Or, does the computer go crazy or something? I know on a car I have, it can all be removed, but sometimes it necessitates the computer being reprogrammed. My question concerns a totally stock 92 F250 with 460 auto. Any help?? Thanks.

You can remove your catalytic converters with no problem. Just MAKE SURE that when you get the exhaust work done the o2 sensors are back in place. That will cause a check engine light for sure and other problems as well. As for the smog pump, emissions canister and all that, i'm not quite as sure that it won't cause problems, but you'll need a different belt to reroute around the pump, and to block off all removed hoses etc. Get a second opinion on this, as i'm not sure. Good luck

removing cats, air pump,etc....

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Mar-02 AT 06:24 PM (EST)]On my 1989 F150 302 I removed the cats and air pump. I also removed all the hoses ect. that goes with the pump. On this engine the air injection goes directly into the back of the heads and has a one way valve close to the head. I removed everything on the pump side of the valve. I have not experienced any problems related to removing those parts and have had them off the truck for almost a year.

Make sure to keep the o2 sensors. I added long tube headers and just cut the threaded part off of the old manifold and welded it to the header collecter. I had to lenghten the wires though.

Thanks for the feedback. I was thinking of just changing the exhaust from the flange where the cat bolts on rearward. That would leave the O2 sensor in it's factory spot and just free up the exaust from there back. It's dual (2 1/2"??) to that point already.

I helped my boss do the same thing to his truck (89 F250 7.5l) this summer. He made a pipe to fit in place of the cat and just plugged the air pump hose. The cat must have been plugged because it made a huge difference in power after the truck warmed up. Cody
