Will a 5.4 Super Crew pull?

My dad is wanting to swap his 7.3 crew for a 5.4 super crew but has a 7500lb camper will the Super Crew pull this thing? The rating is 8800lb but well you know will this thing get out of it's own way?

Not well... not well at all! Keep the 7.3 or he'll be sorry.

5.4 SuperCrew maxes out towing at 7900 with 4x2 and 7600 with 4x4. GVWR runs from 12,000 to 12,500 depending on rear end ratio. (From 2003 Ford towing guide.) I agree with haroutd above, keep the diesel.

Keep the diesel. The 5.4 in the crew cab is definitely to small. If he feels the need to get out of the diesel get a V-10.

His big thing is he want a smaller truck. 90% of his driving is in town. The super crew drives better as well according to him. He knows as I do it ain't no V10 or PSD but will it do the job for mostly short hauls 200 miles or less?

IMHO, yes. No problem. Especially for short hauls every now and then.

You'll lose some power compared to the diesel, but you'll also lose A LOT of mass by going down to the F150.

Drive an F250/F350 SC SB followed by an F150 SC SB, both with the 5.4 V8. The difference in the feeling of power between the two is amazing.

Waxy's on the ball with this one. The smaller F-150 has a lot more power to it than a big heavy F-250 with the same engine. It's not as stable a towing platform, especially when dragging 7,500 lbs behind it, but it will get you from point A to point B. If a smaller truck is the priority and towing performance is not critical, he can get by with the suggested setup. Just don't expect it to tow as well as the bigger truck. Performance will suffer, but if this is an occasional occurance and distances are not long, the inconvenience can be endured. If the terrain is relatively flat without a great deal of uphill pitch, you shouldn't have too much of a problem.

Will a 5.4 Super Crew pull?

I did this last Fall and just last week got a beloved SuperDuty back! I had a 99 F250 crew w/v10, upgraded to a 2001 f250 crew lariat w/v10 and then decided to consolidate our truck with what my wife was driving and got a new 2002 F150 supercrew lariat with the 5.4. Much easier for her to drive and I'll admit easier to drive in town. What I missed was all the room inside (width and rear seat legroom), a full-size short bed, and the ability to tow without worrying. I tow my Jeep on a trailer (6500 pounds) short runs and it would do it but the stability, braking, and power were long gone. I now lost my tail-end (no resale in Supercrew) and am back at a 2001 F250 V10 XLT but am so thankful for the big truck. Even my wife is glad to be back "home"!

Well he just went camping and his words not mine here. " In town it pulls better then the 7.3 PSD it seams to have just as much get up to it with the trailer. On the hwy it is OK till about 60 that is all it really want to go where the PSD would run easy 70-75 but he said he did not need to go that fast any way. The Super crew is a 4X4 and does not squat to much either and with the 2 sway bars it pulls pretty good." I was in the hospital so did not drive it myself!

I think it depends on how far you go and what the terrain is . If its hilly like up in vermont then you need power. I do short trips with up tp 10K and it does fine. I'm gonna get the predator when it comes out this fall LOL. Winter!!

I have the 5.4
