just bought a 2003 f250 cc 4x4...the color is red and there is a ton of orange peel in the paint job.....not really what i would expect from a new factory paint job....is this typical of the ford paint??? has anyone experienced the same thing??? any feedback would be greatly appreciated..
Jeff, if the orange peel is in the clearcoat, you can take it back to the dealer, and they'll buff it out. The paint should be covered under the warranty, just like anything else.
it look like it is all over the truck, but heavier in some places than others...i am bringing the truck back anyways because the dealer is suppossed to fix a paint flaw in the hood....it looked to me as if the hood had been touched up, so ir is very possible that they re-shot other parts as well...thanks for all of the feedback
I have a 2003 f-150 and there is orange peel on her also, I actually saw a commercial for the Lincoln Navigator and they show a black one at ground level and when they open the door it has one of the worst cases of orange peel I have ever seen.
Be thankful that you just have an orange peel problem.
The"orange peel" effect may be lessened by wet sanding the clear coat and buffing to obtain the desired finish. But this is very difficult to do, especially on a new vehicle where the clear coat is usually 1.5 - 2.0 mils thick. Not a project for the faint of heart.
The orange peel does serve a purpose. Once you sand and buff your truck you might be amazed at the defects in the metal that are revealed. The orange peel disguises many flaws.
The problem bigger than the orange peel is the base coat failure on the horizontal surfaces. I have a 2002 BLACK FX4. I've owned the truck for a year and the paint is about to fall off.
Ford is in the process of making me happy, but we aren't there yet. Over the past few months I have learned a lot about the ongoing paint problems at Ford.
I have purchased 6 new Ford trucks in the past 12 years and will continue to be a Ford truck owner.
With more than 20 years of experience in the paint industry, I am no longer a novice. But this paint problem is real and no one seems the have the solution.
thats good info....there are actually little white spots in various parts of my paint that look as if the paint didnt take, or the clearcoat bubbled up....either way, not really what i expect from a brand new paint job.....but i still dig my ride either way
Yes the Orange Peel IS covered in the warranty, however, when I took mine in they said ... Yes we can fix it, but we will NOT re clear coat. Im thinking... umm you take it off you should put it back correctly. Anyway, I deal with it now because there was no way I was letting them take the CC off and not put it back.
