I have a 1968 f250 390, it ran good but exhaust manifold leaked, and starter was beginning to go. Replaced with fpa headers and new pipes, magnaflow muffler. Old exhaust was 2inch,and replaced with 2.5 inch. Put in mini starter with heavy heat wrap too, as I was warned headers can fry up starters.
Fires right up and engine seems to have more pop. And initially running great around the neighborhood. But when I stop or idle it starts to stall. (and if I just barely touch the gas it just dies).
When I restart it cranks fine but I have to pump gas and keep it to floor to get it going, and then have to really stay on the gas, or it stalls on idle.
Even if I just fire it up cold and let it run for less than 30 seconds, the same problem happens... So I don't think it's a "too hot" issue. It seems like a vacuum or distributor issue, but I don't know how to troubleshoot. Did I screw up my timing?
Any suggestions. Again, Didn't have this problem before my header and starter upgrade.
Thanks!
Auto. Has a pertronix electronic ignition.... New coil and spark plug wires(8mm).new battery and cables. Everything is well grounded.
Thanks
Most all early auto chokes operate off the exh pickup tube that hooks up to the thermostat coiling that opens & closes the choke butterfly,
And the later electric auto choke sooooo which one do you have
If you have the exh pickup type and it now not being used your choke won't open causing the engine to stall..
