Master cylinder

Looking to replace the master cylinder on my 66 F100, want to keep everything original, looking for a reliable place to find with the brake light switch in the master cylinder. Any recommendations or any have any experience with this?

Welcome to FTE

You might at least consider, a rebuild kit for the master cylinder currently installed.

If the bore is not too pitted, it can be honed and the rubber parts replaced.

With all that said a new manufacture master cylinder is not a bad plan, along with wheel cylinders, brake hose, spring hardware, etc. Anything mechanical of this age needs a thorough going over - all of it.

Suggest check the condition of the individual brakes to determine if parts need to be repaired or replaced. Just rebuild entire brake system on 65 and you may be faced with the dilemma of whether to purchase MS and/or brake components thru a Ford part supplier or local auto parts store. I decided to go thru local NAPA store and although the items were either manufactured in China, or Mexico, IMO, NAPA quality control was suitable for my needs and at a significant difference in cost. I would be surprised if even DC source was not imported?

Over past 45 plus years can't count the number of times I have replaced or rebuild the brake system on both 65's and each time it's as if I am learning all over again. If it comes to rebuild/repair brakes may want to let members know and perhaps pick up a couple of pointers, may prevent having to disassembly and re-assemble again, ask me how I know??

Wheel and master cylinder rebuild kits are to renew the old rubber components in cylinders in otherwise good condition. They're not magic and are just really for cleaning up a cylinder that has no major pitting.

Yes, does not require degree in rocket science to rebuild; done a few, but IMO, it would depend on the condition of the MS, I have used the honing tool and rebuild kit with differing results. Just saying, if decide to purchase from local auto parts store, a MS rebuild kit runs approx. $25, and a honing tool would run approx. $9, and I would not rebuild w/out honing the cylinder, then not sure I would bother considering a MS runs approx. $50 for reman, or new $75, which includes a warranty. Anyhow, just my $.02 cents advice, which is about what it's worth.
