I'm going to pull a rear end this week from the junk yard. It will be out of 96 f150 with a 3.55ls. I will be rebuilding it myself and I had a few questions. First with the trak-loc should I use the carbon fiber clutches or the regular ones. Also I only want to run a 31in tire should I stick with the 3.55 or go ahead with 3.73? It's a daily driver and I only tow every once in a while. Nothing heavy though. What do you guys think?
Does it need a rebuild or is that just a "might as well" repair?
I'd pull the cover and take a peek. If you decide to change the gears then rebuild the carrier. If not put the cover back on and save yourself some $$$.
Today I pulled my new rear end. Took a look inside and it looks great no metal shavings at all. When I get it in my truck do I have to swap out the speedo gear or will just re calibrating the psom fix the speedometer being off?
I have a 3.55 rear with 31's on my truck. With a 351 it ain't bad at all. I can merge into highway traffic doing 75+ without using full throttle to get there, and if I wanted to I could take her all the way up to the 95 MPH governor in overdrive.
It COULD use some more gear, but it's entirely workable. Where I notice it is off-road or towing, just doesn't have as much torque as I like sometimes but nothing that stops me from doing either one.
