after a loud screeching sound that sounded like a spun shaft rubbing on metal iwent under and found the starter wabbling around. Its going to be a first for me. Anything out of the ordinary i should know before moving on with the replacement..

Not uncommon. Starter MAY be ok still. 3 bolts, one may be one missing completely. Top one is the most aggravating. For me a 8in extension with a deep well puts the ratchet in a place where I can get some swing on it. You'll have to work it by feel, you won't be able to see it.. Don't forget to unhook the batteries or you can make some pretty sparks .
Theres a couple threads on here about good upgrades, i don't know the numbers for sure. But the 6.4 starter will be a direct bolt in replacement. Plus it cranks smoother, and faster. Ive been meaning to get one because my starter is old and tired, doesnt matter how charged the batterys are its only hitting half the RPM a 6.4 starter will

Ford had that same hidden third bolt fiasco with the old FE big block gassers. No biggy once you do it.
I have other things higher on my priority list right now, but here is a 6.4 starter I will be getting. price is good, free shipping, no core charge. LINK

You'll need to go in threw the passenger side wheel well, remove the tire then the plastic lining guard and you'll have access to that top bolt. It will take some creativity to get that sucker out though.

Sounds like a plan. I will look at going this route next time.
Don't remove the wheel or splash guard. Starter change on the 6.0 is real simple. Yeah, you can't see the top bolt, but you can feel it and it's simple to get off and on.
It's a 15 minute job with all for ties I the ground.

Agreed. Takes longer to get the wheel liner out than it does to change the starter.

That is how I did mine. A couple extensions and a flex head ratchet. Just make sure to disconnect BOTH batteries. I do both the pos. and neg. terminals on both batteries. I have seen a single terminal disconnected and within a couple minutes the cable slowly goes back into the shape it has been in for years and makes an electrical connection. All though, today is the 4th, LOL.

Glad I saw this post. Will be getting a new starter.
