1950 knobs on 1956 light switch

1950 ***** on 1956 light switch
I want to keep the interior of my 1950 F3 as close to original looking as possible. I will be doing a 12 volt upgrade. From reading this forum a 1956 light switch has a rheostat that will let me dim the 12 volt light bulbs I will put in the 1950 instrument panel. Will a 1950 **** fit on that switch? Also will the 56 switch fit into the 1950 switch opening in the dash?
