The XLT aluminum trim panel on my truck is in fairly good shape with the exception of a few minor dents. Does anyone know if there is a good way to go about smoothing them out?
Flat surface and a dead blow hammer? Worth a try. Just give it a few good smacks (you'll want a tarp of something under it so you don't scratch it all up) and see how it comes out.

Yup, buy a new one. "fixing" them will just make it look like you tried to fix them

Well a new one isn't in the budget. They want far to much money for what the part is. I bought a new one for the old truck for about $300, and thought that was steep. Now they want almost $500, which is not really worth it.
I was thinking of trying something like dixie460 or stak suggested. The dents are very minimal in depth and are not creased.
Well, then git to it!
It won't look brand new but it might help. Might f'k it up worse too, I don't know. Mine was all banged up so I just took it off and welded the holes up. If you look at it from a certain angle you can see where I welded, but this ain't a show truck it's a DD and weekend play toy.
If you want new then you have to buy new, as Brad said. I don't think there's much you can do to make the aluminum look perfect again, given the finish on it.
Best bet is keeping an eye out in junkyards. I bought one of craigslist that is pretty darn nice for $100. My original I still have, the plastic is perfect on it but it has hail dings. Thought about seeing if one of those paintless hail remover guys could fix it!
