I know it's the wrong forum, but any Ford electrical guys out there?
On wife's 2011 ESCAPE, we want to install another "cigarette lighter" type female power port that is live only when the key is on. (to power up the GPS without having to unplug/replug it every time.)
Can anyone suggest best place to tap into an easily accessible wire that is hot only while vehicle is running---maybe off the power window circuit, and what color wire am I looking for & where without too much disassembly?
Do you have a test light or a multimeter? Take either one and find a fuse at the panel that is hot on ignition. You may be able to find an open slot that is hot on ignition. Once you find that then add the fused circuit. I assume the Escape has a fuse panel for accessories inside the vehicle.
Your owners manual probably lists which fuses are delayed (the radio fuse would be a good place to look) and use a fuse tap to get power from it instead of hacking into your factory wiring.
found an unused fuse port, and made up a male connector with a tip emulating a fuse pin to stick into it...works great. In the old days, would have tapped into a wire with a "T" connector if you knew the right color code, but nowadays everything is buried in a wrapped up harness.
Thanks for the comments.
