Has anyone rigged up a cell phone to hide in your truck so you can locate it if stolen? I've seen some instructions on the web but they are rather vague.
There are standalone gps locators out there for this purpose. They can be very inexpensive to several hundred dollars. From a quick google search it appears you can use most of the equipment from many different sites. I would guess there would be a monthly fee, but so would there be with a cell phone. Just make sure you don't buy one that requires OBD because well our trucks don't have that.
I have thought about this too. Old iphones can be gotten cheap and have built in tracking. I thought about getting one, wiring the car adapter under the dash and making a holder up inside the dash somewhere. Added bonus would be I'd have a spare phone with me at all times.
. According to the reviews, you can use this site to access it, http://www.gpswox.com/en/gps-tracking-pricing. For live tracking the site is free, for $2 a month you can have a history log, geofencing and a crap load of other features. For me, it would be the best way to go, device is like $35, and for basic live location, service is free. Don't think you will get that from a cell phone. Also, this gpswox website has a list of compatible devices, which does not include the one I posted, but I am sure you could find one from the list for little to no money.

Reason: something weird happened
I have seen people buy Pay as you go SIM Cards and put in the device. They do not activate them until they have a loss. Then they activate the card to track the vehicle. No cost until they need it.
