Been looking at posts for days but can't find what I need
Major leak from this 7.3. Figured out that my dip stick adapter failed. Tried the slick o-ring replacement but the adapter was warped and would not seal. So I went with the strictly diesel over engineered adapter that does not require dropping oil pan. $300 instead of pulling engine.
Leak slowed down but did not stop.
Then I discovered that Oil is pooling on top of engine in valley. It is moving from front to back so I am doubting it is the turbo pedestal.
I changed HPOP line fittings. Part of leak stopped.
Next I changed the pump mounting gasket cause it looked like oil was coming from under pump. No help.
Bottom plug, big plug on back, and c clamp retained panel on back are all dry.
Reservoir housing gasket is dry best I can tell. No fuel in valley so doubt filter is leaking.
I could not tell what was leaking with pump out and can see less with it back in.
Mirror and light are challenging my abilities.
Any suggestions on how to look between valley and pump against reservoir below where pump mounts?
What about other things that could leak in that area that I should check?
You can stick a cell phone into the valley and have it take photos via voice command. Taping it to a stick or in some cases a flexible stick works well. A smaller phone is easier to move around but you should be able to get one of the big ones in there.
Remove the electrical plug on the back of the fuel filter for better access.
Make sure the flash is on.
You can get the phone in behind the fuel filter and from the rear side of the intake plenums from what I recall.
I had a fair amount of oil leaking from the intake plenum boots so check there. You can get photo of them from all sides with a cell phone on a stick.
Clean white paper towels stuffed in and around the valley is how I have been able to quickly locate where my leaks have been. With the engine idling, I found leaks at an HPOP plug, and one of the HPOP line fittings. Both were spraying out a fine mist.
using binuya's recommendation and am thinking that stupid unserviceable plug on the HPOP is leaking
After 10 min of running the truck only the part of the rag which was under this plug that faces down had oil on it
Guess I am gonna be removing the pump again
Anyone have experience with revealing this plug
I have seen mixed reviews online about it not really working either because they didn't get the threads clean of oil or the aluminum pump housing could not handle being torqued on a second time
I really don't want to do the pump removal a third time.
I had a problem with an oil leak. Went on for a couple of years! Finally had a friend find the leak. It was a bolt on top of the engine toward the back. Oil was filling up in the valley and leaking down the back of the engine. Turned the bolt 3 or 4 turns and leak disappeared. Nearly drove me crazy until my friend found the problem. Good luck. Dennis
I just made a similar repair yesterday. I ordered the longer non serviceable plug along with fuel line seals and gaskets in anticipation of HPOP pump removal. Once I checked for leaks a little more in detail in turned out to be the 2 O-rings on the high pressure line fittings at the HPOP that were leaking. Changed them out and all is good. I couldn't see the leaks before, so I got engine degreaser in a spray bottle. I used an air blower with a suction pick up too spray the degreaser and then water with the air to rinse. A flash light then allowed me to see the leak very clearly while the engine was running. Again get it clean first, it makes the search easier and the job too.
