Excursion 4WD issue

My Excursion has had an issue for about a week now. the 4x4 will not light when I put it in hi or low. I do this by stopping the vehicle, putting the vehicle in neutral and turning the switch on the dash.

I tried to turn the manual hubs but it is not marked like in the owners manual so I don't know if Clockwise is manual or automatic and / or vise versa. does anyone know?

I was diagnosing an issue that I think is related to the $XD feature which is when I turn the wheel hard to the left or to the right, I get a stuttering of the front wheels. At low speed the wheels will not turn at all and the steering wheel kicks back. When driving straight there is no issue at all.

All of this started at the same time.

Any thoughts?

thanks!

Excursion 4WD issue

Clockwise to lock.

Sounds like you're stuck in 4wd with the locking wheels and stuttering while turning.

clockwise to lock into auto or manual? In another words, If I do not want 4WD (don't use it that much). Which way should I turn it?

thanks buddy!

Also I have tried it in both directions and I get the same result. So it does sound like it is stuck in 4WD.

thanks!

Sorry Harley

Added Miami to my profile. $XD was an attempt to type 4WD. Sorry about that!

Yes it has been in 4WD but I don't go off road much. So if I do NOT want to be in 4WD should the hubs be turned clockwise or counter clock wise?

Thanks again!

Excursion 4WD issue

Well, clockwise to go to manual, counterclockwise for auto.

However, I don't know if that will fix you being stuck in 4wd but worth a try

NO worries, There are several members near you
Still not knowing the year OR really what you have as far as hubs go !!! The general rule is as Nate said CW to lock, CCW to unlock (Free or Auto).
YOU HAVE A LARGER ISSUE The front hubs can be locked & you'll suffer no real issues with drivability ( only premature wear, and a 1 MPG loss ).

The transfer case is still in 4X4 if you are getting the binding of the frontend. To put in or take out of LOW you need to apply the brakes as well as to be in Neutral. You said the 4X4 light is not on BUT where is the dial sitting ??

Sorry thought that stuff was in my profile. 2003 Excursion limited. Auto everything.

I just tried slowly moving forward, slamming breaks and putting into natural. Did this a couple of times in fwd and reverse. But the front end is still binding when turning. Was there another step I missed?

The dial setting on the dash is in 2WD. I put it on 4WDL and slowly moved forward slammed breaks and then pop into neutral. I've been told I should get feel / hear the positive click that it si finally in full 4WD so I can then turn back to 2WD but I don't.

It seams the vacuum is working. Turning the AC I see the vacuum line for the AC turning. Any other things to try to test the vacuum system?

I think you should be able to have the **** in 2wd with the hubs rotated as far ccw as possible drive it forward and back maybe 20 feet for good measure, place it in park and get out and shouldn't that knuckle / axle shaft on the backside of the wheel rotate and spin freely by hand?

Isn't that an instant way of knowing for sure?

The 4x4 guys should be able to clarify/clean up my thoughts on this soon.

OK, Again the front end being locked is the least of the 2 issues.
1st be sure your hub are all the way CCW (auto)
2nd DON'T SLAM ANYTHING
3rd drive straight, backward 25'-50'
4th apply & keep your foot on the brakes
5th turn the SOTF *** to low (look & listen)
did you here a click/clunk ?? Did the light come on ?? If no repeat at least once.

I think your truck is stuck in 4x4 & if you can not get it out with the cab control you need to get under the truck & manually sift the T-Case into neutral. I can 1st try by adding power to the shift motor to see if you hear anything If not pull it & shift it by hand

How long has the original poster owned this Excursion?
Can't bad u-joints also cause binding, while in 2wd, but with hubs locked?? (the front axle[s] rotate with attached wheel when locked)
Check fuse for esof, perhaps previous owner had issues with 4wd.. and sold it this way..

Consider doing the hub service yourself to get more familiar with the ESOF system. A nice afternoon job with a cold brew on the side.
