I have a 94 f250 Mud truck/Daily driver with a stock 351w in it ... I want to get more horsepower and torque; due to the large tires its slow on the road and could use a little help rotating the tires. I would like to know what simple, easy, "bolt on", performance things that i could get and put into the truck to increase its power a torque ... I would love to put a mild cam in it and convert it to carb and put all the internal performance goodies into it, BUT it is my daily driver so i guess ill have to stick with easy performance parts for now ... If anyone knows of some simple things to put into this truck thatd be great ... THANKS !!!
why would you want to convert it to carb? kinda going backwards isn't it?
Yes but I like going back to when things where simple lol A carb is much easier and chaeper to fix than EFI plus there alot easier to tune to your likings
hey i like a good choppy cam and a double pumping 4 barrel holly on a classic muscle as much as anybody.........but keep your fuel injection on your truck.just feed her some gears.will change the whole truck.transform it into a whole different animal.fuel economy isn't a concern when your lifting and adding huge meats anyway so gear her steep and enjoy it.
If your truck came with 3.55 gears it now has an effective 2.82 gear because of the larger tires. The single best thing you could do right now is put 4.56 gears in the axles and that includes stuffing a big block under the hood.
To find out what gearing it has look for the axle code on the drivers door pillar and post it up.
not too much you can do with stock heads. long tubes will give you a better pedal feel, but wont do more than 10 hp with stock heads.
youd need 100+ extra hp before youd make that lift/tire combo feel better. if you have 4.10's id spend money on power, if you have 3.55's theres no way around regearing it.
if you go the power route, however, you might break the toothpicks.
even if he has 4.10's,he's still only got 3.29 gearing now.no where near enough gear for all the weight of those heavy, power robbing 39.5 x 15 tires.
he's got to install a set of 5.13's just to get back to the 4.10 range.to feel like it did with stock tires and compensate for the weight of the tires,he's got to go a bit deeper with a set of 5.38's.
if i installed a lift and 40" tires,i would go with the 5.38's without question or second thought.
Mine moves great with 4.10s and I ran 39s before I just went with cheap n tough in the form of military 37s.
Don't get me wrong, I'd like 4.56 better....but with power 4.10s are just fine. Being able to effortlessly peg speedo at semi comfortable engine speed is a plus of the 4.10s and big tires.
Given the cost of gear swap, especially if you're paying someone else, I'd take power if I had to choose.
