Hello everyone.
I just did a complete rebuild on my 1976 ford 390 engine. It is installed into the truck and almost ready for break in. However, while I was looking through my leftover parts early today to see what was left to do, I found this part that looks as though it should go on the crankshaft. Is this indeed a part for the crankshaft installation, and if so is it necessary?
It may not be "required" per se. If rebuilt with a dual roller timing set, the factory oil slinger will interfere with the chain and do engine damage. You can modify the slinger to clear the chain or eliminate the slinger altogether. The slinger’s purpose is to splash drainback oil about the timing set. Drainback alone is sufficient enough to lubricate the timing set. Slinger is also designed to keep excess oil away from the crankshaft seal.
Your call.. use your best judgement. But there might always be a nagging little voice in your head thinking about whether to reinstall it....
