okay first off i dont know jack about carbed engines.....anyways.....does my 86 f150 with a 351 HO have a egr valve? it doesnt have a cat converter so im thinking it doesnt and no smog crap either.......(why it sounds good )
It would have had a cat originally, and I'm sure an EGR system as well (and still needs both to be legal, but you may or may not need to have it inspected in your state). So if a previous owner removed the cat, there's no telling what else was also removed.
no emissions or anything here so that might explain why it doesnt have one. i might have to take this truck in to see what else is missing and to tune my carb since i dont have a clue how to tune them
If it says "unleaded fuel only" on the fuel gauge and or at the fuel filler door, it had a cat. You can look at the radiator sticker also, and it will say "catalyst" on the sticker.
The lousy fuel they sell now with the ethanol in it is hard on carbs. If it has any age on it I am sure it needs a kit. If you do not have emissions and most of the stuff has been taken off anyway, you can put a brand new universal type holley on it for about the same price as a rebuilt original one.

yeah all the gas here has ethanol im going to ask the gas station here that makes and delivers their own fuel if they have any non ethanol.....the current carb on it is a 1405 edelbrock. i just put a open element air cleaner and wow it actually made a difference.....starts better, doesnt bog down as much and solved my stalling issue. however im still thinking some tuning can maybe fix the boggin down issue.
If installing an open-element air cleaner helped then your 1405 is either improperly jetted or badly in need of a rebuild. That type of air cleaner is the worst thing you can do to a carb'd vehicle. In winter you need hot air to help with fuel atomization and prevent carb icing - but an open-element cleaner gives you cold air. In summer you need as cool of air as is possible to improve power, but the open-element cleaner gives the carb the hottest possible air from behind the radiator and near the exhaust. And, at all times you need constant temp air to ensure the air/fuel ratio is constant, but the open-element cleaner has no way to do that.
So, rebuild the carb. Then tune it using a factory air cleaner system, including the cold air ducting and hot air pickup from the exhaust. And sell your open-element cleaner to some unsuspecting guy that doesn't need the engine to run right but wants it to look cool.

im taking the carb off tomorrow to see whats up. i will let you all know what i find. my buddy knows all about carbed engines so i will let him do his magic
