IM new to this forum. I need some help. I Bought a 1999 Ranger 3.0 5 speed with ifs off my dad I he has had it for the past 13 years and the 4wd has not worked for the past 3 or 4 years. Has the lock in switch on the dash. The t case will lock in front shaft will spin but the front diff will not lock in has new hubs in front both sides. I cant seem to locate the problem. Any input would be greatly appriciated!!
From what I can tell, your 4x4 system is the same as on my 86. A electronic transfer case and auto hubs in the front.
If you are in 2wd, get under the truck and turn the front driveshaft. You should only be able to turn it about 1 turn or less before the front hubs catch it. Then you won't be able to turn it at all. If you can turn it freely as much as you want, your front hubs have a problem. Once they lock, you need to back up at least 8 or 10 feet to unlock them, even if they lock by turning the shaft by hand.
99 has the pulse vacuum hubs. Kinda a poor design. I suspect that the hoses have failed and not allowing them to lock in. There are several options, first, fix the existing setup. Second, there is a way to make the front axle "live" all the time by a simple mod (IIRC the 2001 up were this way). And finally you can put in manual lockers like the rugged ridge units, so you can get out and lock them (or just leave them locked) when you need it. All of the above does not mean the 4x4 system is engaged, just the front axle.
Find the Pulse Vacuum Hub controller located on the back of the radiator support just to the passenger side of the radiator and confirm that the vacuum lines are connected and in good shape. Trace the lines from the controller to each hub to confirm they are connected and in good shape.
