OK, so I would need to get a compression gauge, attach it to each cylinder and turn the engine by hand? What kind of reading am I looking for?

No. It would have to be spun over quicker. By the starter. With the compression tester in one of the cylinders you spin the engine over. You'll hear the starter making a Raaana-Raaana sound everytime that cylinder comes up on it's compression stroke. Spin it long enough to get 5 Raaanas. 180 in each cylinder would be pretty good. 170 hopefully. 165 bare minimum for a rebuilt motor IMHO.

First pull *all* of the plugs out, block the throttles wide open, and disconnect the power lead from the coil.
Screw the compression fitting into your first cylinder.
Crank the starter until you see that the indicated pressure stops rising. Stop cranking and record the pressure for that cylinder. Continue this for all 8 cylinders. Then report your numbers here for and several people will analyze them and recommend your next step.

That missing piece of head gasket calls for cleaning the block deck and checking for flatness.

PS. You can "rent" a compression gauge at most of the automotive chain stores.

The only trouble is....the engine I am considering is not in a vehicle, it's on a stand. I am glad to learn about doing this test, however. I was in my local O'Reilly's yesterday and I verified that they do, indeed, have a compression tester to rent out. I'll definitely use that knowledge, and their tester, in the not-too-distant future!

Well beings that it's on the eng. stand it won't have a flywheel on it or a starter.

You won't be able to turn it over fast enough to do much good with a vac. ga. other then pull the plugs see if any are oil or carbon fouled then pass on it. Or you being pulling it apart doing a rebuild.

If the motor came out of a wrecked vehicle then theirs a reason to have it, but if it came out of a vehicle with on damage then ask why it was pulled out and fouled plugs would be an answer then "Pass"

Update - I gave up on the first deal for the reman long block. Seller never got back to me. So, I've been looking for another deal. Found some heads I may buy and put onto my engine. The seller told me they are C90E, with date codes 9A9 and 9D1. Good? Work OK with my engine? I appreciate all the help/advice!!

I am now the owner of two C90E heads. Guess I'll take them to the shop tomorrow for machining.
