If you think LMC is high buck! .. just wait'll you see what Just Dashes (justdashes.com - Van Nuys CA) wants for the little charmers.
Just Dashes sells their repro padded dashes to Carpenter & some of the other repro parts sellers.
I had a 1968 Galaxie XL F/B that had a slight crack in the padded dash. I went to Just Dashes, guy looked at the crack, wanted 800 bucks to fix it!
Forget it! I bought a vinyl dash cap for about 100 bucks, placed it over the cracked dash. The dash mats are much less and for a slight additional charge can be personalized.
Do the dash mats completely cover the original? My original dash is red and I want to change the interior color eventually.
Dash mats typically only cover the horizontal surfaces exposed to the sun. You do have the option of painting your pad... or maybe just the exposed surfaces after installing the dash mat.
As with any interior painting, preparation is critical due to ArmorAll (or similar) products having potentially being previously applied.
There's a mat on my dash. It was on there when I bought my truck. It doesn't cover the entire dash and the cracks in the dash pad, at the ends, can still be seen.
A dash cover or mat is just a (tacky looking) band-aid fix.
This is just a personal perspective but, I bought my truck to make it (over time) into a nice looking truck. Unless a nice, original, used dash pad can be found for a decent price, this means I'll have to buy a new, more expensive, repro dash pad. That's OK by me. I bought the truck to fix up and I can spread the cost out over time.
The dash mat already in place isn't staying and, I'm NOT making a ghetto fix by gluing a dash cover over the cracked original dash pad.

That's a cheesy dash mat.
Mine came from the PO and goes all the way across and looks like it is meant to be there.
The other real alternative is to remove the dash pad completely. Look around this site and the results are amazing in my opinion. I bet it's cheaper to fill some holes and then paint than replace the pad.
My 1969 is missing the dash pad. I am thinking about just leaving it off. Still looks good. I will get the dash painted back to its original color eventually. I believe that it would look cooler then.
I tossed the badly cracked dash pad in my 69, not knowing ahead of time how expensive they were to replace. Now I'd be happy to have a used one with a few cracks and a cover over it. Live & learn I guess!

I took mine off 3 or 4 years ago, and like the 60s look of it. I pulled the defroster deflectors out of the pad, and they screwed in to the spot on the dash ... like it was meant to be.

I did the same thing. I'm glad I'm not the only one.
This is the type of molded cover I was considering. It glues over the existing. Anybody try this type? I'm wondering if it covers completely or if the original shows on the edges at all because my original is a crappy red and I'd buy the black cover.

Yep. Me. One of the 1st things I did to my Bump was remove the Blue wavy velour material (read Chicano) my PO had glued to the dash pad and door trim panels. This left my dash pad a real mess. While I do want to put a repro dash pad on it eventually, I went the ghetto route as a "just for now" kinda deal.
I don't remember which brand my dash cap is but it does not quite cover the bottom of my pad. And the defroster vent holes are a little off. I WOULDN'T AND WON'T USE IT PERMANENTLY.
