When I start my truck after it's been sitting overnight or for a long period of time it will start right up when I turn the key. If I've been driving it and turn it off to run in a store or something I have to pump the hell out of the gas and let the starter turn over and over and hope and pray it fires up. It always starts but I've come close to draining the battery a few times. Any thoughts?
A common problem is heat soak which boils the gas out of the carb. Quite a bit winds up in the intake so its flooded and not enough gas in the bowl.
For warm re-start I generally hold the throttle about 1/3 open... don't pump it. That will get some fresh air going through the intake and help it get started.
If the fuel pump and fuel line is really heat soaked, it may temporarily vapor lock also. Adding an aft mounted electric pump can help with this. Hot re-start on mine seems a little better after adding the electric.
