Im guessing this gap isnt normal? Am i missing something that goes there? I looked up a diagram and it doesnt seem like theres anything else. does the wheel need to go down farther? because i couldnt get it to anymore. thanks in advance

That definitely doesn't look right! Do you have a spacer behind the steering wheel? I know my Mustang used a spacer but I can't remember if my F100 had one. What year is this?
its a 69 with bendix steering box/column (not sure if that matters). i have a mustang also and it has a minuscule gap, not nearly as noticeable. the only thing under the steering wheel on the truck is the spring thats on the steering shaft. and a metal ring thats bolted to the under side of the wheel, its for the horn im assuming. i must be missing a piece?
As D&D said there is a clamp on the firewall under the hood, then the two bolts below the front edge of the dash that supports the column. Loosen these bolts and the column will slide up and down to adjust that gap.

Don't do as I do - loosen the bolts under the dash and keep pushing on the steering wheel. As Homer said - dohhh. Pull the column back to you with a little twisting and turning.
HIO opened my eyes that time.

Look at them peepers!!!
The steering column tube has some adjustability up and down on the steering shaft. Yer just gonna change their relative position... It's like pulling up a sock.
Just my .02, Inspect the rag joint at the gear box to column shaft, that it is not torn or deformed. I don't know the history of this truck, but i have made the same column adjustments and one day found myself in down town Dallas with no steering. RIGHT in front of Reunion Tower.
My .02
This is how, I adjusted the gap after replacing the steering column tube.
The need to reset the lower shaft clamp on my 4wd to close the wheel gap end play like pictured above OP.
When you don't have a helper you have to get creative Right!'
I used a piece of wood 1"x2"x?cut a length needed to fit with the area needed.
I then wedged the stick from the steering center of the wheel up by the head liner trim rail upper cab area with a rag on each end as not to scratch anything.
So then, I pushed the wheel down as far as it would go then set the stick of wood onto the wheel to hold it down in all while, I then open the hood then slid the lower shaft clamp up into place against the lower column bearing until it stopped then tighten it in place. Then checked the for correct gap and no shaft end play by pushing down ward on the center of the steering wheel.
don't do like i did and use an impact driver to get it down. i stripped the nut threads and had to cut the nut off and i missed the nut sometimes and chewed up the shaft and i still can't get the steering wheel off damn my impatiencs i also found that that if your put a car c6 in your truck the shift linkage won't fit i was a bad day so i put my tools down and walked away til later when i wasn't so angry.
