So I have a 84 idi with a c6 trans. The trans doesn't have a reverse my mechanic friend says its a transmission bad but told me to just replace the tranny instead of fixing the band. So I was wondering what transmissions would bolt in as far as automatics and manuals
diesel only. gas transmission has a different bolt pattern. why not check into getting the trans rebuilt? last one i had done was only $500 for everything new inside, including planitarys and pump.
The stock manual transmission for your year of truck is a Borg-Warner T-19. There were a couple different ones issued, with different ratio ranges. A ZF5 is a pretty-much direct bolt-on replacement for the T-19. A swap to either one is quite doable, all bolt-on. Best bet is to find a donor truck with a manual tranny so you have all the parts (floorboard cover, shifter, pedal box, etc).
4x4 and 2WD have different tails, so yes, that matters. With the 4-speed Borg, the transmission itself is the same between gasser and diesel (gear ratios may be different). But there's still the different engine bolt pattern to deal with, no matter what transmission you choose. In the case of the Borg 4-speed, there's a separate bell housing, so if you can get your hands on a diesel bell housing, a gasser tranny would bolt up to it. ('Course, chances are, if you can get your hands on a diesel bell housing, you can also get the accompanying tranny....)
The ZF5 has no separate bell housing; the case bolts (through a plate) directly to the engine, so the bolt pattern becomes an issue. People have posted that they've been able to re-drill the tranny case to put a gasser ZF5 onto a diesel, but it's, well, non-triviall.
I just rebuilt my c6 trans. I have the 7.3 idi. The big block trans pattern is the same but there is a special cut out of the case to access the torque convertor. I went to my local junkyard and pulled a c6 off a small block, and used the parts I needed and ordered the xtra clutch disk from transmission usa to rebuild my c6 with the special cut c6 case. Besides the forward clutch assembly drum, servo, valve body and vacuum mod most of all the c6 parts are the same.
Does 4x4 or 4x2 matter and could a gas 4 speed work on a diesel?
4X4 and 4X2 have different cases.
a 4 speed gas trans will work, because the 4 speed uses a bolt on bell housing. so if you can find a diesel 4 speed bellhousing and a gas trans, you can make them work

bolt pattern being different only matters for 5 speed and automatic trans with built in bellhousing. the 4 speed uses a bolt on bellhousing so gas trans will work
Thanks everyone. I'm going to monitor Craigslist for now because I got a quote for a rebuild today for $2000 and I ain't about to drop that when the truck cost $750.
2k might be for a E4OD trans.perhaps he mistook what you have? that or perhaps a c6 reman plus it's install i suppose might get ya there.
at any rate though, for a $750 truck your looking for a good used diesel c6.or perhaps better yet a whole parts truck with a 4 speed.your going to have to be careful actually no matter what you do at this point.you payed so little for the old truck, that by the time you fix the trans using any method besides near free, you will want to compare your final cost with just selling/re-buying a different truck all running.you possibly could come out with a better truck for the same or less $ than fixing this one.
this is the method i use to stay in a "decent" car.when it's time to move on,put your wallet first.
