..and what an improvement! Compared to the stock tubes, the truck looks better, rides a little smoother and is more capable off-road. Simply reprogrammed the speedometer (took 90 secs) to maintain factory shift points, and I was set. Highway RPM has dropped by ~150. Steering, acceleration, and handling are all unaffected. There is, in fact, improved steering response (although from what I am unsure; the harder fresh rubber perhaps). And who can go wrong with 17/32" of tread? I threw these on as replacements for the balding, unevenly worn BFG AT's: [a href="http://www.tirerack.com/tires/dunlop/du_rovrt.jsp"]Dunlop Radial Rover R/T[/a]. To anyone considering the swap to 31x10.5" tires: I say go for it!!!
Hmmmm, I have a '93 F-250 4x4 that currently has 16 inch wheels on it. I do light off roading and have thought about putting on larger tires. Is a 31" tire smaller or larger then a 235/75/16?
Also, I've noticed that some other F-250 4x4's (92-96 i'm assuming) sit just a tad higher then I do. I believe they are running stock tires judging by the narrowness of the tire and that it's on a steel rim... is this tire size again?
Do a search in this forum for "speedo recalibration" and you will pull up tons of info. I know a 235/75/15 tire is ruffly 28-29 inches, so yeah a 16 is smaller
Primary rig is:
95' F-150 EB 300/6 5 spd with 4" Superlift, MSD, Ram Air, Gibson Exhaust, and coming are some BFG MEATS
Then theres:
88' F-250 Superduty 351 + c6
92' Thunderbird 3.8L V-6 FOR SALE!
95' Mercury Cougar 4.6L V-8
80' E-350 300/6 and a
3 spd column shifter baby.
The newest addition to the Ford family is a 99' Mustang GT 4.6L
My 97 F250 HD runs 33's stock. Not sure what the metric numbers really are on em, but I got in an arguement with a buddy about em being 33, and the tape measure don't lie! 33's on the money. Cooper somethin or others.
JiveBoogle: You're running 235/75 tires? The 31x10.5s would be both taller and wider than those. Although I think F-250s came stock with 235/85R16s. The 85-series stock tires, I have found, average out to 31.8" overall diameter, secton width of about 9.2" and tread width around 7". A 32x9.5" tire, in light flotation terms. The 31x10.5" is shorter but slightly wider than stock F-250 tires. They give a buff appearance but they are only rated for ~2300 lbs. capacity whereas you require something around 3000.
Only 31's on a 4x4??? How is it that I fit 32x11.50's on my 95 2wd F-150?? I've had no problem when turning or anything, no rubbing going on??? 31's seem a little small for a 4wd truck??????
The tires I wanted aren't made in 32x11.5" and I didn't feel like spending hundreds on new wheels for them. This along with the fact it's a daily driver (thirty miles one way to work) and not a dedicated off road vehicle. I did consider buying 16x7" wheels with the F-150 bolt pattern and sticking F-250 tires on, which are nearly 32" tall.
