Question 4.6l Swap

Hey y'all

So I acquired an '01 Eddie Bauer, with 350k on the clock. Body and interior are in pristine condition for this mileage, but the motor has a def knock. I have an '98 xlt with the 4.6 with 125k on the clock, and am planning on swapping that motor into this '01. The only difference that I've found in the 2 years is the COP manifold. is this this only thing I have to worry about switching over (Intake from the '01 to the '98 for the COP bolts.). Or am I missing something else?

I guess one way is to look at part numbers. I doubt there's much difference in the base engine, but might be updates on heads, manifolds, valve covers, timing cover and so on.

Alright gents... no bickering, please? Save that for lawyers, and ladies. I just needed to know if I switched the IM over, if I could do a direct swap. Internals are all the same, only dif. is the IM

I think you are saying that the '98 uses coil packs while the '01 uses COP ignition? They are two different animals. The coil pack ignition is a waste spark system and fires two plugs at a time where the COP ignition fires one plug at a time, so the PCMs have drastically different ignition control modules.

I know that my son had a 1998 Contour SVT (with only one coil pack) and he installed a 2005 3.0 Durateck out of a Mercury Sable that had COP ignition. They built a special wiring harness to fool the 1998's waste spark computer into thinking it was firing a coil pack when in fact it was firing individual COPs.

But your setup would have to blend TWO coil packs, one on each bank of the V8 and make it fire COPs on both sides of the engine so it might be a much more involved wiring harness mod.

Will you be able to use the existing throttle cable on the new engine? Are the MAFs calibrated the same, or will you have to use the MAF that belongs to the PCM you go with?

Are all the sensors the same? Do both engines use knock sensors? Do both PCMs handle knock sensors?

Lotsa stuff to research.

True, but all I'm talking about doing is changing intake manifolds (convert the '98 CP to the '01 COP). All internals are the same, and I wouldn't have to change the PCM for the simple fact that I ain't replacing any electronics, only mechanicals.

I guess the only thing you need to worry about is if it's 1 or 2 knock sensors. I don't know when they started using 2 knock sensors.

'97? So all Expeditions have 2 knock sensors? That's good to know. I thought the 2v engine had 1 knock sensor on the 1st gen in the first years.
