Strange windshield wiper problem.

1976 F100 Ranger XLT. I have an issue I have never seen before. When I turn the wipers on, they will stick in different places. I have tried to move them when they stick, but you can tell the motor is holding them. I am assuming the motor is bad, but I've never seen this particular problem. It has an intermittent setting. Could this be the switch acting up? Any ideas how I can test them? I was thinking about jumping out the switch. My 16 yr old son drives the truck and he got caught in a bad storm making it seriously dangerous. Need to get this fixed for him. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Ok so you do know that some of these of trucks came with intermittent or delay wiper option right? Does the switch just have 3 clicks? Off, on low, on high? Or a on, then with a rotation of the wiper ****, like the headlight switch (that is the delay time setting) then a low and then a high?

Two different types of windshield wipers, two different wiper switches.
Two speed wiper switches have a low & high speed.
Intermittent (delay) wipers were optional on 1973/79 F100/350's and 1978/79 Bronco's. Intermittent is not another name for low speed!

There are TWO different intermittent wiper governors. 1973/77 is one type, 1978/79 is another.
D3TZ-17C476-A (replaced D1ZZ-17C476-A) Intermittent Wiper Governor / Obsolete

Wiper **** comes off with a small flat tip on the metal tab pressed on. You will have to remove the dash instrument bezel to get to the wiper switch lock nut. It will have 3 notches, but it easy to take off. If you think it is just the switch, I would get a new one, then unhook the old elec connection and then plug in the new one and let it hang test....meaning let it hang from the elec connection out from under the dash. That pic of the box is the intermittent wiper control box.

As my original post stated, it is an XLT and it has an intermittent setting. Thanks for all the parts sources. I really don't like parts swapping as a means of diagnostics. There should be some way to test the three wiper components to see which one it is. Trying to save myself a few steps inf someone recognized the problem. Between a meter and a few jumpers I'll eventually figure it out. Thanks for replying.

I'd guess it is the intermittent control box, and they are not readily available. Yes only a couple of parts to trouble shoot, switch, motor and control box. Along with fuse panel, wiring, the mechanical part of it.

With a multimeter making sure power is constant to the switch, then the motor when the switch is on would be the path to start. Swapping in a new switch is a quick trouble shoot step and only one of the 3 available parts wise. And they are not really that much $.

You can also get a regular switch, unplug the intermittent control box (it is jumpered in before the switch elec connection) and go back to standard off, on low, on high w/s set up.
