Rear side windows

I have a 2001 excursion. 2 years ago I had a small crack in the windshield so i took it to a local glass shop. The owner there noticed some issues with the right rear side glass. He said he had seen this before with excursions where they will start to fall out due to a damaged bracket that holds the window in place. He said it could have even happened due to an attempted theft. So he replace the window and bracket which is made onto the glass. Yesterday while loading the truck I noticed the same window was out of place by about 2 inches on the front end of the window. This is disturbing that this has happend again after only 2 years. I do not belive that this was due to an attempted theft twice on the same window. Have any of you had this happen with your excursions? This window is about $800 and difficult to find.

I'm on my second X with the pop out rear windows (an 01 and now an 04) and never had any issues. Maybe he installed it badly? Can you post some pics? Thanks for putting your location in your profile BTW!!!

Never had a problem with mine but I remember a thread a few years ago about it. Some guys even glued theirs shut to prevent having problems. I don't think many of us regularly use the rear windows. When I do, I always forget to close them.

My XLT rear windows don't have the option to open. I wonder what all is different between the fixed position XLT setup and the Limited/EB moveable ones and if retrofitting (down grading) to the fixed position ones would be a better long term fix than what you are currently dealing with.

If I remember right, the windows and seals are different.

My 2000 XLT has the opening windows. I use them once in a while, don't seem to have any problems, no sag or anything. Hopefully it stays that way...

While the back glass on the Excursion is unique to the vehicle the motor is *most likely* not. Junkyards tend to be full of minivans and that's the first place I'd look for a motor/bracket out of a Windstar or similar from the same years.

I don't consider it a downgrade so much as just a personal preference

Heres what I found out. The pop out window has a metal bracket that is attached to it with epoxy. As temperatures change the metal and glass heat and cool and expand and contract but the epoxy doesn't and therefore the metal bracket separates from the glass. The new window that was installed 3 years ago was from Ford but ford only provides a 1 year warrenty. My glass guys says he will get the non pop out window from the XLT excursion and install it. It bolts in instead of that bracket setup and should not give future issues.

I would imagine that the XLT window has brackets that are epoxied on similar to the hinged brackets that are giving you issues. How else would it attach? Nothing penetrates my rear side glass.

Like a windshield I assumed but are there bracket heads on the outside of them on the XLTs?

When I got my X the passenger side glass wouldn't open correctly, and then when open, would drop down 1/2" and not close right. Took it to Fast Glass, the guy had seen this issue before; he re glued the bracket/ window. About 1 month later, it did the same thing. He said he was using some stronger epoxy this time, but if it did it AGAIN, he'd have to order new parts from Ford. Luckily, it's been great.
We travel with ours open almost all the time, having dogs and farty/ stinky kids makes it great venting towards the back. Highly recommend trying it if ya'll haven't.
No way I'd glue 'em shut!

My glass guy went with the fixed glass. He said this window uses bolts to hold it in place instead of the hinged bracket. He did need to add a few bolt holes but said this was a good fix for this issue. He also said that finding the ford pop out window was getting very difficult and if we went that route it would be a NOS part. The fixed window is still being produced. I am happy with this fix and if I loose the left side window I will do the same for it. My insurance covered this and my glass guy ate the $100 deductable since this was the 2nd time he had worked on this window.

I have a 2002 EX and have a issue with the rear side windows leaking. My windows seem to float on something, guess it is a gasket. They have a strange looking thing at the rear that looks almost like a window latch about halfway up the window, attaches to the window and then over to the rear column or body. I could not find any release on it, what is it for? Owners manual did not seem to have anything about them. Someone please tell me about the windows that open, how they work and how you tell them. Also , how do I get in there to seal them? This EX is great, a V10, pulls my heavy car trailer great and is a joy to pull with on a long trip and even better now that gas has gone down.

Which model excursion do you have? XLT, Limited, EB, etc.
