Has anyone here ever rebuilt a 4.9? I want to rebuild one but have never really dealt with putting one back together I have torn it down I realize keep everything separated by cylinder but is there anything else I should know about rebuilding an engine? Sorry may sound dumb just trying to learn
What rebuild kits did you guys use to rebuild your engines? I've found a couple one is on eBay for like $235 and another was on http://www.perfectengine.com/Ford_30...th-mkf300a.htm
I like the second one better because it's more of a trusted source than just eBay.
But if you guys have used a kit and liked it a lot let me know but this is my first rebuild.
Before you order anything take the engine to the machine shop and have them do there work then after they are done you will know what size pistons and bearings to order before that it is a guess.
Frenchtown is right sorry but you still need to get with the machine shop so they can advise how much boring will be needed depends how worn the cylinders are.
The auto machine shop business is slowly dying because there is so little profit in it. You would be amazed how little take-home income some owners make. In the old days, a significant part of the shop's income came from selling parts, such as pistons/rings. This also gave the shop owner some warranty protection on those parts. Today guys come into the shop with a box full of parts from Summit, Jegs, PAW, etc., which they got at the same price as the shop can get the parts. Handling warranty claims gets complicated for everybody.
If you are willing to spend a little more and have your machine shop provide the parts, you are very likely to get a lot more on-going help and service from the shop owner . . . .
I got the head off today it looked good 6th cylinder had maybe a couple drop spots of rust not huge... I was told the owner before the kid I bought it from shot the 6th piston out the oil pan and replaced the oil pan and drove it home on 5 cylinders. But after the rebuild he sold it to the PO who I bought it from. From day 1 that he owned it, it had timing issues so makes my friend and I believe the timing chain and gears are off... The cylinder walls looked good he said it could use new rings.. I can still see some cross hatching not much but it doesn't look bad.
Sent the girlfriend home to get some time to work on the 300 pulled the oil pan to inspect what was going on oil filter had no metal in it which is good
hopefully that finally worked... But the 5th piston has a different set up one side has a bolt the other has a nut I know someone has been into the motor before but not sure if this was factory
Here's a full picture without the oilpan
Going to start pulling everything else and clean the block up hopefully tomorrow. Praying that these photos work
That is a main cap stud bolt. It is supposed to hold a stabilizing strap to the oil pump pickup.
Ahhh that would make sense totally forgot about the nut that holds the oil pump pickup.... Thank you hopefully I'll get some more pictures of the block tomorrow probably the cylinder walls
Pulled the Pistons today 5 and 6 both had broken rings the bottom one? There are 2 on each piston the bottom one was broken in 3 pieces on piston 5 and 6. Could this be the reason why it was running like crap? this was before the other 2 pieces fell out. Kind of measured the bore roughly 4" which it's suppose to be need to buy batteries for the digital reader.

Ya think? I'll bet the skirts are cracked too. It looks like it has seen a hard life - like somebody ran it in detonation for long periods. Too low octane fuel, too much spark advance, and maybe lots of carbon build up too. I'll bet it needs re-boring and new pistons.

It was spitting and sputtering but it liked when you tapped the gas instead of holding it down but the timing was never set correctly and was never checked by a timing light by the PO.
