Well, here's the problem... I'm gonna be runnin it in a mud truck, and if I put a different (other than stock ford) intake, I will have to jump up a class... but at the same time, I wanna run a 4bbl. If I could find a set of 4bbl head and intake, I'd just switch it, but then I might have to clip the frame to run stock 4bbl manifolds (headers are a different class too). What compression would it make if I used a set of 4bbl open chamber heads with the stock flattops?
You may have just missed it, but there was an auction on e-bay for a 351C 4V intake for 2V heads -- it was an Australian Ford unit, iron and all. The Aussies made that sort of thing. Don't know if he's still got it, but he claimed to have a bunch of other Aussie stuff, so you might look for one of his auctions.
the aussie intake is a good choice, but the mismatch was very common in the early C days. a 4V manifold on 2V heads is supposed to be good for 35 HP. as far as what is legal in your class is up to you to convince tech! hey!, they're all stock Ford parts! just not from this continent...
Bubba,
The clevelands did come stock with a 4bbl, so I can use that. As far as i know, Yes, i can make cam changes depending on where i run. I may run it anyway, as I'll try not to get a cam that's evident at an idle.
CJJ,
Thanks for that info... that may be the route i go, if i can find one and can afford it.
GRC,
That doesn't sound too bad... I'd like to have the aussie intake, but it sounds like those are very rare...
Thanks all you guys
From what I understand, the Aussie intake is pretty common -- in Australia. It's just paying the fees to get them here that is the kicker. If you can find some guys that have already imported them, then you are in business.
Yeah. I'm in Illinois... so I don't have the foggiest idea of who would import that stuff... With my luck, when I do find someone, they'll be in california, and the shipping will be more than the part.
78ford100 So you are running a 351C?
I don't want to pick on the 351C God i loved em but for your situation of "bending rules" would really be better suited for a differnt block.
289/302 blocks go to 355 with a 351C crank (lighter than sbc)
351W blocks go to 406 with a 400M crank (torque good)
All these would share the bell & engine mounts you already have.
Granted they never made these engines but they would be "stock parts" no dif than a Chevy guy running a 383
If you decide to go the Aussie intake, and I take it you are chasing a stock style manifold, stay away from the spreadbore ones and look for the pre pollution one that was used on the XY 351c, it is a squarebore 4BBL manifold which works extremely well. Bolt up a 1" phenolic spacer with the same 4 hole square bore pattern and your set. I don't know what freight over to the states is worth but if you get desperate let me know and I can send you a few if your keen. To give you some idea of what the manifold is like I am currently running that set up on my car with a 750 race demon, decent size crane cam, stock standard 2V closed chamber Aussie heads with stamped rockers, standard bottom end, C4 with 3000 stall, and it runs a flat 13 all day long on slicks with good manners on the street, and decent enough fuel economy to allow for the 2 hour drive to the strip in the neighbouring city.
