Anyone ever try using a cam sensor/ coil packs type setup like on EXPLORER 5.O? Just curious because I have one laying around. Not THAT much reduction in drag but at high RPM everything helps right?
You'd still have to keep the distributor to run the oil pump. MSD makes a drop-in distributor gear that serves this function without being a distributor, allowing you not to use a distributor. They make a distributorless ignition system using a crank-mounted magnet for triggering the ignition. The benefits are not in the reduced drag, which is negligable like you said, but in the cylinder-to cylinder timing adjustments that can be made much simpler by moving magnets on a billet aluminum wheel rather than machining the reluctor paddles in a distributor. The bottom line is, if you tried to run this on the street, you'd end up paying more money than its worth on custom parts, or you'd have to end up leaving your distributor in, thus negating the reduced drag effect that you're looking for.
Of course, if you wanted to be REAL crafty, you could always hook up the crank-trigger setup anyway, and use it to trigger a redundant ignition with a system selection switch, routing the fire from either coil like they have in NASCAR. You never know when your primary box will fry, after all! TK
Thanks for the ideas. Guess I've got too much time on my hands ha ha. Found out since original post that the Explorer cam sensor is used for fuel injection timing and the crank sensor is used for ignition timing like the nascar setup you mentioned so the basic parts are there, well in a box now.
