2001 e250 with 4.2. when I go to start it first thing it doesn't crank right up. Have to hit it again and then it stumbles few a few seconds then fires. When it's hot it's fine. Any ideas? Thanks
When you first turn the key to "ON" you should hear the fuel pump "whirl"
Do a fuel pressure test on the fuel rail schrader valve, see if it's with in spect's.
Next time you cold start it, turn the key to "ON" for a few (5) seconds, then turn it to start, if it fires right up, then you have found the problem, fuel pressure is not building up for the start. Could also be a bad fuel pressure regulator, leaking down over time and not keeping pressure in the system.
I am not familiar with the 4.2 Essex but if it is equipped with a MAF sensor it may be bad enough to effect cold starts but not bad enough to throw a code.
