Yesterday while driving home from work I noticed the temp gauge close to the H outside temp was maybe 85 and hummid in Houston TX.... This morning it was raining and cool gauge was about normal... So my question is this normal? I had just replaced my temp sensor since I bought it a month ago so the temp gauge just started working, also checked the coolant and it's rusty brown I'm guessing last owner never flushed it so would it help in anyway if I flush and clean the coolant system?
Second question... Once the car warms up it takes very long to switch to second or third gear... When it's cold it shifts just fine any ideas?
I'd start with a cooling system flush and put in a new thermostat.
As to the tranny problem it sounds like it's getting old and lazy, I'd pull the pan off and see if there's a lot of disk material in it, a small coating is ok but too much or pieces are a bad sign
Flush and T stat sounds like a good idea. If that is not enough, it may need radiator attention.
It will cool best with clean water plus coolant conditioner/corrosion inhibitor. Maybe try that first after flush and see how it does. If OK just remember to put the anti-freeze back in before it freezes... or after radiator service.
