old hitch

My brother just bought a 90 dually and it has a gooseneck hitch that we've never seen before. There's a plate with a pin of sorts sticking up in the bed. I'll try to get a pic but wondered if anybody has experience with some of the old stuff. He bought the truck from the original owner so it's been in the truck a long time. He may have to find a number and give the original owner a call to find out what it is and if it can be converted to ball type.

I think you are going to have to provide a pic. I am trying to picture what you are describing and I can't.

If it is a pin..then would that not be the ball that a gooseneck rides on?

I'll try to get a pic. The local camper sales had never seen anything like it.

Sounds to me like an inverted 5th wheel. This type of hitch is the inverse of a normal 5th wheel, in that the pin is in the bed, and the hinged swivel plate and jaw assembly are actually mounted on the underside of the trailer.
