First off thanks for the opportunity to post on this forum...im sure there is lots of good info being traded around here...I have a 2003 f250 5.4 with a couple of bad valves and low compression and a dead miss because of it...I just bought what appears to be a 2001 5.4 from an f150...im worried now this engine wont work and cannot find anything online that can tell me yes or no....is there anyone here that can help....thanks
Long block is the same.(PI 5.4l 2V) There will probably be variations in the intake manifold and maybe exhaust manifolds. Most of the 01' SD gas engines did not have EGR but the 150s had EGR (different weight class). So to get around that use the intake manifold assembly from your 03' and transfer it over to the 01' donor motor. Transfer the exhaust manifolds over to the 01' motor if your truck does not have EGR. If their is any variations in accessories you can transfer them over. Basically you want to turn the donor motor into the 03' motor.
You are correct on the EGR the 03 has none and the 01 f150 (donor) does....I thought i read somewhere tonight that there may be a water inlet on the block under the intake that may not be on an 01...but could be wrong
thought i would give an update...motor is in and running...had to basically strip 2001 motor to the long block and transfer all the parts from the 03....but it runs great now...thanks for the help
Just curious TX why the engine swap and how many miles? You had a 5.4 two valve? I have an 06 with a 5.4 three valve which is beginning to show signs of cam phaser noise.
I should have mentioned that mine has only 85000 on it and I am considering changing the engine as opposed to rebuilding the front of my Three valve that is considered by many on here to be a ford mistake. I am looking into which engine(s) may work well.
this shop that changed my motor put the 01 accessory's on the motor and the alternator is getting getting hot and draining my battery...is this a bad alternator or is it because the harness from the 03 is not compatible with the 01 alternator...any help would be appreciated
Is it hot when the truck is off for a while? or when it runs, the Harness should be the same. Could have a bad diode trio and the alt is sucking the battery dead, that could be why it's warm if the engine has been off for a while, meaning couple hours.

Like DFK said, not a big deal to replace the cam phasers. Ford was doing many of these under warranty and lots of good instructions and advice on this forum.
Thanks DKF and Collins for the advise about the cam phasers. I have read all the threads on here and elsewhere about them and found the parts on rock auto where I get everything. I have also read lots of stories about those that have had the job done for them and had the problem return. I am concerned that it is just a poor design and have given thoughts to an engine change. I am still in the diagnosis stage and need to pull my variable timing solenoids and check them first. I just did my complete front end where I found I need a new auto lock hub for the passenger side, and I am waiting on a steering damper I needed to reorder because the oem setup does not match what the Rancho catalog has listed for my truck. U-joints and exhaust are next on my list before I tackle the phasers. It is sad that this New England winter really beat up on my vehicle with less than 100,00 on it.
