Powermax Options. Which one?

Okay. I'm trying this again, this time hopefully without somebody hijacking it to hawk their buddy's website via PM's.

I'm looking at Powermax turbos, as it's becoming obvious that the stocker is going to be a limiting factor and potential future failure point on this build.

I'm seeing stage I, Stage I with a billet wheel, and Stage II.

What are the differences and benefits of the different choices?

My motor specs:

Ceramic coated pistons
Colt Stage II cam
155/30 injectors
Cat/muffler gone
Atlas 40
SCT tuner, but haven't ordered any tunes yet
Will have full gauges.

Mostly a daily driver, but also pulls goosenecks from time to time <!-- / message -->

Howdy,

I had some questions myself so I did a little google search on my own

The "Biggies", [Banks, USDIESEL PARTS, & others] didn't seem to offer "Stage-1", "Stage-2" Garrett Powermax choices for the 6.0L engine

According to Extreme Diesel, there isn't a "Stage 2" (Powermax) turbo for the 6.0L engine manufactured by Garrett.
Is this a stage 1 or 2? What is the difference between the two?

Garrett doesn't offer a “Stage 2” turbo for the 6.0L Power Stroke, only the PowerMax Turbocharger (Item# GA772441-5001S for the 04.5-07 and Item# GA777469-5001S for the 03-04). The other Garrett turbo we have on the website is a stock original equipment quality replacement.
The PowerMax is designed as a “drop-in upgrade”. The turbo retains use of factory components such as engine electronics, mounting pedestal and requires no additional modifications to your factory exhaust system. Utilizing a larger compressor wheel the GT3788VA turbocharger will increase your maximum power range while supporting up to an additional 175HP.
I also went to several sites that sell Garrett Powermax turbochargers and while they do offer Stage II turbos for Other engines, the only choice for the 6.0L engines were (2). one for 2003-2004.5 and 2004.5-2007 model year engines.

I suspect someone claiming to offer a stage II Powermax turbo for the 6.0L engine either is mistaken, it's a misprint or they're just making the claim to charge more money.

For the Duramax model, the claimed difference is a larger diameter compressor wheel and a claimed "supports up to 575hp"
Garrett PowerMax GT3794VA Stage 1
Supports Up To 500HP with no sacrifice to drivability

Garrett PowerMax GT4094VA Stage 2
Supports Up To 575HP with no sacrifice to drivability
Larger compressor trim (52), plus larger GT40 turbine wheel and vanes vs. Stage I
Then I went to Garretts website www.turbobygarrett.com/

Did a search for "Stage 1" and it only returned Duramax.

It's possible that some turbo rebuilder is claiming there's a "Stage 1" and "Stage 2" for the 6.0L engine but doesn't appear to be Garrett.

Then I did a search for Stage-1 and Stage-2 discussions on forums (the MOST inaccurate places for info!) and the answers were all over the map!!!

I seriously doubt there's many people that can tell a "Seat-of-the-pants" 75hp difference in 2 identical trucks between 500 and 575HP. It's only a tad over 10%

If you REALLY want a definitive answer, I would suggest writing Garrett (Honeywell) to their tech support addresses and ask that specific question.
https://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/contactus

I would bet they would give you the right answer without the sales pitch most all the retailers will always give.

And it'll probably be more accurate an answer than you would get from any opinion forum.

And that, IMHO, was my opinion!

Cheers,

Rick

Yeah. I saw that one too. It's the 2004.5-2007 model "upgrade" (compared to the OEM turbo)

Just like the 2003-2004.5 model.........

They don't claim either to be "Stage II" ............

Lets don't get this twisted, because NOW I'm hijacking your thread.

You asked for options and I gave you one. Others asked for the information, the first being a moderator. I was simply following FORUM RULES and you call me an A hole, which I do NOT appreciate. I have NO vested interest in that product OR website. I don't even know them nor do I own one of their turbo's. I did do a LOT of reading and know a lot of people who run those turbo's with fantastic results. You didn't originally ask for TECHNICAL information or I would have tried to provide it for you to the best of my ability, because that's what this website is about.

Best of luck with your project.
