Does anyone know if you can get just the turbine wheel for the early '03 6.0?
And if so will it fit in the updated turbo?
You must change the vanes, unison ring, and turbine housing with the wheel.
If you could find those parts, yes, it will fit on the updated CHRA.
I do offer custom built turbos with options such as upgraded compressor wheels, ceramic and dry film lube coatings, ect. I can mix and match whatever parts you desire if you wanted to put together a turbo.
This is the perfect topic as i posted one similar to this yesterday Elite diesel sells a kinda souped up VGT turbo(http://www.elite-diesel.com/Powerstr...rbos%206.0.htm) with the 03 Style compressor and housing..which is 10 blade. And also upgrade the turbine side which they do not state what they do but i have heard video clips of this turbo and it whistle INSANE!!!! This is what i want along with a little extra ponies. I sent them a E-mail but they will not answer me back. So matt is this something you offer?? could i send you my turbo which has low miles and have it modified like this?? I looked on your site but everytime i click on a link it wont open....you can pm me if you need more details or cant post pricing here. thanks

The reason I asked is because when I first got this truck, after gutting the cat and removing the muffler, it sounded like a jet waiting for take-off. Now ,at idle, the turbo will spool up for a few seconds then die and I can't hear any whistle from the tailpipe. About a year ago the turbo was replaced with a reman, but it continued to whistle loudly until a few months ago. I'm frustrated and confused and want my whistle back.

I couldn't get the above link to work, but is there any logical reason why my turbo would just stop whistling one day? There doesn't seem to be any loss of power, the turbo just won't hold a steady whistle at idle like it used to.

Probably has alot to do with the latest 06E17 recall and flash strategy that eleminates the use of the EP sensor to control the turbo.
I pulled the turbo and did the recommended steps for cleaning, and noticed that the cam-like piece that moves the unison ring was pretty stiff. Should this piece move freely with the VGT acuator removed?

Good question, as i have not had a VGT turbo apart. Matt will probably chime back in on this shortly.
IMHO--the 03 turbo is easier to get the bolts off than the 04 because of where the mounting bolts are located on the pedastal. You'll need a 10mm flex head gear wrench and an 11mm deep socket (if you use an 11mm gear wrench on the back turbo to y-pipe bolt the dang thing likes to get stuck for some dumb reason). It takes about 1.5 hours to get off the truck the first time you do it--maybe 2. I can probably do it in under an hour now. I'm not sure if there is a detailed procedure in the tech folder for removing the turbo but I know Ford doctors website has a detailed cleaning procedure that's really good--maybe overkill.
Dirtworker--I think the unison ring actuator should be pretty free when the VGT is removed. It's been a while since I did one so I don't remember exactly. Maybe one of our good Tech's will respond. www.forddoctorsdts.com is the website I think
It's not as hard as you would think. The front two bolts that hold the turbo to the pedestal are easy to get to, but the one in the back requires some awkward positioning.
I lay on top of the engine and use a 10mm gearwrench. If they are positioned right you can loosen all of the bands with a 11mm deep socket and ext. It usually takes me around 45 mins to remove.
